MUSEVENI CALLED ON AFRICANS TO REMOVE THE AGE LIMIT FOR PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES

For Ugandan President Africans benefit from erasing their constitutions any provision limiting age for the presidency. Yoweri Museveni takes the view that Africa needs good and experienced men to develop.

Yoweri Museveni has given this position to the Swahili writing RFI. In this interview, the Head of State of Uganda has proved fundamentally opposed to the age limit "imposed" by African constitutions to candidates in the presidential election.

"At 75, can you be unable to work for his country? There is a country called Tunisia, which elected a very old man. And it helps them now, "said Museveni, referring to President Beji Caid Essebsi 92 years old.

"These constitutional limits preventing Africa to have good and experienced leaders. So should other African countries to blow this provision unconstitutional, "he added.

This position is anything but trivial. With the removal by the National Assembly in December 2017 under Article 102 of the constitution which stipulated that a candidate for president must be at least 35 years and not more than 75 years, Museveni ( 74) in power since 1986, will run for 6th term at the 2021 presidential election.

As in 2005, this amendment introduces again limiting to two the number of presidential terms. But this limitation will not take effect until after the next election, allowing the State House tenant to appear again twice. Left to rule until 2037 or Ad vitam aeternam.
