Project 59: Medical support and food assistance

Medical support and food assistance to children and the elderly at St. Stephen's Parish in Katakwi, Uganda, and financial support to build metal roofs for two multi-purpose ward rooms

Here is how Father Remi Nyengere, a Missionary of Africa, from Malawi, who is in charge of Katakwi Parish, submits his request:

In connection with this two-pronged project, the Head of Missionaries of Africa for Uganda writes: "St. Stephen's Parish in Katakwi serves a population with rather limited means. The Missionaries of Africa who are engaged in it work closely with the local population to make them aware of the management of their needs. Despite their limited means, people contribute by bringing what they can with money and labour. However, they do not have the financial capacity to meet all of their needs. Help from outside would be greatly appreciated. That is why we come knocking on your door and strongly encourage the participation of all those who can."

They are forced to turn to private pharmacies but they do not have the money to pay for these drugs. In addition, they do not always have the food they need to eat. In collaboration with women from our parish we have formed a support group that organizes activities in the local community to obtain food and money to pay for the costs of the hospital. But we have to admit it's not enough.

The people affected by this project are mostly children and elderly people unable to pay hospital fees and unable to feed themselves properly while in hospital. This support is provided to all without discrimination on the basis of religion or tribe.

While continuing our activities to meet these needs, we are appealing to your generosity. We know that there are many needs in different parts of the world and that the cry of the unfortunate is increasingly heard on our planet. What you will bring will help to relieve the weakest among our brothers and sisters.

1- MEDICAL SUPPORT AND FOOD ASSISTANCE TO THE CHILDREN AND THE ELDERLY OF ST. MARY'S PARISH. STEPHEN'S PARISH IN KATAKWI, UGANDA.

Katakwi district experienced two sad events: the Kony Rebel War and the bloody attack by the cattlemen of the Karamoja tribe. In addition to these two events, the region experienced a period of drought due to the lack of rain and this led to famine. Many families face a lack of food.

In the district there is a hospital where we try to support especially children and elderly people who cannot afford the costs. The government cannot provide medicines to the patients.

"Amen, I say to you, whenever you did it to one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did it to me." (Matthew 25:40)

2- REQUEST FOR FINANCIAL SUPPORT TO BUILD METAL ROOFS FOR TWO MULTIPURPOSE HALLS IN THE PARISH.

The aim of this project is to replace the straw roofs of two Parish Meeting Centres with metal roofs. The people participated in the construction of these Centres and spared no effort to make it happen.

The goal is to provide a place for young people to study and for Christians to have a safe environment for prayer and meetings, especially when the rain that makes the place unsuitable. All people in Katakwi district will benefit from this improvement.

Thank you for all that you can do to facilitate the improvement of these Multipurpose Centres which are very much used by our communities.

Father Remi Nyengere, M.Afr.
