KENYA - Dam bursts due to heavy rains, at least 45 dead; the solidarity of the Bishops

Nairobi (Agenzia Fides) - "We are deeply saddened by the loss of human lives, injured people and the enormous material damage that has occurred throughout the Country, the worst and most shocking tragedy was the collapse of the Nakuru-Solai dam that caused huge destruction of both life and property" states, on behalf of the Kenyan Episcopal Conference (KCCB Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops), His Exc. Mgr. John Oballa Owaa, Bishop of Ngong and President of the Episcopal Commission "Justice and Peace", in offering his condolences for the victims of floods caused by heavy rains that hit Kenya in March. The most serious tragedy occurred on 9 May, with the collapse of the Nakuru-Solai dam, ten kilometers from Nakuru, which sweeping away houses within a radius of two kilometers. At least 45 people have died, but several people are still missing. With this tragedy the toll of the victims due to torrential rains since March reaches a quota of over 160 dead.

"In these painful circumstances, I wish to express the solidarity and prayers of the Catholic Church in Kenya and our most sincere condolences to the relatives of the victims and to all those who suffer the consequences of these numerous catastrophes", writes the President of "Justice and Peace".

"While we praise the good work carried out by rescue teams, we ask the institutions and authorities responsible to always guarantee the safety of citizens, ensuring that the prescribed standards are complied with, without compromise. We demand that national and provincial governments respond with concrete initiatives to these tragedies. We ask all Kenyans and other people of good will to help our brothers and sisters who need our help", concludes the Bishop of Ngong.
